Acquiring a rich understanding of the sources of law and institutional relationships that form the English legal system is a foundational building block in legal education. But the digitisation of those sources and institutional relationships makes it all the more important to start thinking about the English legal system as a system of information that can be objective mapped and defined.

As a common law system that follows the doctrine of precedent, the English legal system is inherently highly relational. The terms used in a statutory provision are interpreted and given meaning by the courts in their judgments. Those judgments, in turn, inform the bases of subsequent judgments, which in turn potentially alter the state of the law on any given substantive point.
